Our Journey at the 2026 Old Mutual Mathematics Olympiad

In 2026, we proudly participated in the Old Mutual Mathematics Olympiad, marking a historic milestone for our school. This was our very first time entering the competition, and it turned out to be an experience filled with learning, inspiration, and achievement.

Our journey began in Karonga, where the regional examinations were held at the Mzuni campus, a satellite campus of Mzuzu University. Schools from different districts gathered there, bringing together some of the brightest mathematics students to compete at a high academic level.

We were represented by two dedicated students: Chigomedzo and Lusekero. Both students had prepared well for the competition, knowing that they were not only representing themselves but also carrying the hopes of our entire school. For us, just being part of such a prestigious national competition was already a big step forward.

This opportunity was also valuable for our mathematics teacher, Mr Lungu, who attended alongside the students. The event gave him a rare chance to meet and interact with fellow mathematics teachers from across the country. They engaged in meaningful discussions, sharing ideas and strategies on how to improve student performance in mathematics. These professional exchanges will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on how the subject is taught and understood at our school.

Out of approximately 200 schools that registered for the competition nationwide, only 45 schools managed to qualify for the finals. We are incredibly proud to say that Lusekero advanced to this final stage, representing our school among the very best in Malawi.

The finals were held at the main campus of Mzuzu University in Mzuzu. The atmosphere was both intense and inspiring, as the competition brought together top-performing students from across Malawi. It was a true celebration of academic excellence and intellectual determination.

The final event was well organized and professionally managed. Students who excelled in the competition were recognized and awarded during a formal ceremony. It was a proud and motivating moment to witness young minds being celebrated for their hard work and talent in mathematics.

Although it was our first time participating, we achieved something remarkable: we finished in the Top 10, securing position number 8 nationally. This accomplishment is a testament to the commitment of our students and the dedication of our teachers.

The event was not only about exams and rankings. There were engaging icebreaker sessions where different performers entertained the audience with vibrant local dances, adding cultural energy and excitement to the gathering. Although the finalists did not perform themselves, the entertainment created a relaxed atmosphere and allowed students to enjoy the experience beyond the academic pressure of the competition.

The finalists had the opportunity to interact with Mzuni lecturers, who provided career guidance and motivational talks. These sessions were incredibly valuable, as they opened students’ eyes to future academic and professional possibilities, especially in fields related to mathematics and science.

Participating in the 2026 Old Mutual Mathematics Olympiad was a significant step for our school. Even though it was our first attempt, we demonstrated that we can compete at a national level. Finishing 8th in the country is not just an achievement; it is a strong foundation for future success.

We are motivated more than ever to continue nurturing academic excellence, especially in mathematics. With determination, collaboration, and continuous improvement, we look forward to even greater achievements in the years to come.
